    1968 Painting Interior Metal Parts

I've been using SEM Satin on my interior parts...Shift Plate, Upper Console..etc. I've noticed that the paint chips very easily. I'm stripping the paint, cleaning the piece and applying three coats of paint. Should I be using some type of Clear, or Sealer? Should I have used Primer? Pieces came out looking great, just not sure if I've missed a step

    Thanks in advance,

    Bob DeSimone

Wash the metal in a product similar to metal prep, use a self etching primer, and then coat. Do not put too much paint on the surface, just enough to hide.

      Got it, Dick, Thanks!

When you say, "Just enough to hide" ....How many coats?

I have found that painting the interior metal or Fiberglas trim comes out best if you use the proper base coat in the color specified for your car's trim (over properly primed/sanded with 400 grit). Use two to three misting coats and let dry flat. Then use an interior semi flat clear over that which brings it right back as a very smooth Trim piece that makes the interior of the car pop just like it was new. Then after you see how good the trim looks, let the project creep begin!!

Bob, that depends on how heavy you put a coat on. I like to use thin coats, just enough paint to cover.

FWIW, SEM makes a nice self-etching primer. I've used it along with SEM's Trim Black many times without any problems. As has been recommended already, thin coats work best. Thinner = better...

OK...that's my problem....Need to go thinner. One piece, so I'll strip and start again!!!

                Thanks,

                  Hi Bob,
I agree that the thinner the paint layer can be the more it will look typical of production.
I also found that just how far you hold the can from the part can affect how wet the paint is when it hits the part and thus the paint has or doesn't have a chance to flow out a bit before it dries. In think this contributes to a T.O.P. look too.
Some experimenting may pay off for you.
                  Regards,
                  Alan

                        Hi Bob,
                        Sorry.
I meant Typical Of Production. I thought I was being cool and spelled it out in the first line of my post but not the second time.
