Spare Tire Tub Date Stamp - 1965

When reproducing the date stamp found on the inside surface of the spare tire tub what is the specific size and type of the font? Per the 1965 TGJM I need to place the stamping back on the inside of the tub as it is/was not visible. I've looked but no vendors make a stamp kit so I'm going to go to an office supply store to have one made. Any pictures and the approximate font size and lettering type (Arial?) and approximate location in the tub would be great info to know.

    Thanks,

    James West

      James:

This info is also in the archives.....including pictures. Search for "tire tub stamp" or similar wording.

On my 1967 car, the letters were approx 3/16 high and 1/8" wide. The total length of the date field is approx 1-1/4 inch (9-10 spaces). The letters were all caps.

For my March 28, 1967 built car, the tub date was MAR-9 1967

Re: Spare Tire Tub Date Stamp - 1965

        James,

I found a different font on the tub than the lid on my 67.

The first photo is the lid stamp: (looks like Roman font)

The second photo is the tub stamp: (looks like Arial font)

This is on a late June 67. Larry above has the sizes, which are about right.

I'm not at all sure whether this would be the same for a 65, or whether 65's were stamped. I saw something in one of the achived threads that the stamping started in 67, but that could also be wrong.

For what it's worth, have fun.

James -- My reading of the '65 TIM&JG says stamp on (assume) inside (assume) tub; no definite location given. Nothing mentioned about a stamp on the lid.

Neither of my '65s (Nov'64 and Aug'65), owned for 32 and 24 years respectively, have any evidence of white ink stamp dates. Could have been weathered-off, though, as these were not pampered cars.

Gentlemen, I have been restoring Tire Tubs and Lids since 2006. With over 150 customers and approximately 200 tubs and 200 lids, I have never seen a date for a 1965 Corvette! The dates are on about 10% of the tubs and even less on the lids. I have been asked for my comments on the rewrite of the 1965,6,7 Manuals. The words "may contain a date stamp" have been given, so you do not need to reproduce/restore something that your Corvette may not have had from the factory.

My 2 owner 1965 (virgin) never apart, had NO date stamps on the tub or lid. Lots on the underside of the body...

I have a Late production( July 27, 65) no date stamp in tub. I have 2 low mile 67's and they both have date stamps that look like Jerry's photo's.

My 65 July 2 build has no stamp on the tub. When I finally got the tub open, the original spare was there though.

I have been preaching the same findings Scott presents at the advance judging at regionals and nationals. I've been restoring Vettes since the early 80's and my findings mirror Scott's findings. In fact the gas tank markings are pretty much the same as the tire tub's, most don't have any.

James, I've seen these white date stamps in a few '67's, but neither of my '65's had these date stamps in them.
