    C-3 Fresh Air Vent Cable

Passenger side fresh air pull is very stiff. I removed the shift plate and traced the cable to the vent. All seems fine. No kinks or such. Also, is there a way to lube the cable?

    Any help is appreciated

This may seem like a dumb question Bob, but please bare with me: Have you disconnected the fresh air door so that you are sure the problem is the cable and not the door?

Not a dumb question at all, Terry. In fact, I have NOT removed the door. Never thought of that, since it does open and close....("Dumb" I know...) I'll be doing that this weekend and I'll let you know.

Bob, about the only way I can think of lubing the cable is to stick the entire cable and housing into a bucket filled with oil. may be when you change your oil, save it just roll the cable up so the you don't kink the cable and housing and let it sit all night in the oil, that should let it work its way into the cable housing.

Thanks, Edward....That said, were they ever lubed? Or, were they installed with none?

Bob, those cable types never had any sort of lube.years ago when I worked at the dealer we use to make those inner cable replacements with a special tool to wind the ends. the problem with them is if they ever got kinked they would never work properly again. So handle with care.

I had a feeling...have you ever changed cables? My concern is only with the attaching at each end. Haven't taken a good look at the ends yet

Bob, shouldn't be a big deal the cables are either slide over the attaching end with a locking clip( generally breaks when you remove. or the ends just slide over a hooked type arm. but believe its the clip.

If I remember right these cables have a plastic turn buckle like unit in the middle of the cable that can be tightened to reduce the length of the outer sheath or loosened to extend that sheath. My right hand one was just outboard of the radio and up above the lower edge of the dash pad. I am thinking the outer sheath is plastic, but I could be wrong; it has been a while since I was into that part of the 1970. If I am right about the outer sheath being plastic the oil suggestions above may not be the wisest action. Depends on the type of plastic, but not all plastics play friendly with petroleum products. Might be best to check some more before jumping into action.

                    Thanks, Terry

Just came in from removing more of the interior. Spent a little time tracing and checking the vent cable...the door opens and closes just fine. Once the console is put back together, the right cable is very difficult...I'm thinking there may be a kink it the cable. Tough to tell with it being inside the sheath. That said, I may just go ahead and order a pair and replace them. The driver's side is OK, but I figure, once I'm in there, best do both.

                    Your thoughts?
