1984 Air Cleaner Question

I have a question about the plastic hose connection at the front of the 1984 air cleaner. This is the connector between the air cleaner and the emission air pump. This connector has a square end that extends into the air cleaner base and snaps in place, but it is outside the main air filter. I'm not sure which way the air flows through this connector....from air cleaner to air pump or from air pump to air filter.

Question 1 ......Is there suppose to be any type of filter on this hose inside the air cleaner?

Question 2 ....Which way does the air flow through this connector?

There is another larger hose that attaches to the bottom of the air cleaner which goes to the passenger side valve cover. This hose is in the passenger side snorkel tube and this hose uses a filter.

Thanks for any information you can give me. I haven't been able to find out anything in the service manuals.
