    67 BB Halfshafts

I just pulled these out of Evap O Rust and need some advice on whether I should just leave them the way they are or clean with a brass brush. I want to top flight the car eventually. I do plan on spraying them with Boeshield so they wont rust.
Notice the green paint on the end of the shaft.

    Thanks

I know what I did when I got to that point.......going the against the grain lightly misted the shafts with a good quality cast finished. Not enough though to give the shafts a finished look however. It was noted during judging shafts should be natural but couldn't see letting them scale over.

Be careful that any treatment you apply to BB half shafts might affect the subtle (very fine) surface appearance of the shot-peening process.

Shaft on left is from my L78; that on the right from a '64. Notice the blue-ish heat affected zone from the welding process. This feature is obliterated by the shot-peening.

I think these shafts have too much rust-induced pitting to restore to anything like the original finish. They could be turned in a lathe to establish an even finish (a process that Quanta Products offers) and then shot peened. However, I don't like the idea of thinning the tube section, no matter how little. I think your best bet would be to have these "re-tubed", then shot-peened.

Thanks for the input guys. I will make a final call when I take the body off the frame. Meanwhile, I will just drive and enjoy the car.

Well I just finished my 1/2 shafts on the 71 B/B
Bead blasted them, belt sanded them, put the weld marks on them, then tried to figure out how to leave the natural finish from a shot peen. I was going to take them to a shot peen place and have them done at 25.00 or 30.00 each but then tried something out. I guess it came out pretty good. What do you think.

There is a comparison between an NOS one that I have and vs the final finish. Came out okay. Good enough that there is no cast blast paint on it....All natural!!043.jpg020.jpg019.jpg006.jpg Also you will notice the correct bluing on the strut rods. I also did the same restoration process on the drive shaft. Came out good too. Now I have to figure out the correct part number stencil for it and paint it on.

            Hope this helps.

If you use a wire brush on them you will mark up the original finish of the metal tubing. As some of us know, all big block and LT-1 half shafts were shot peened with number 31 shot. This was done to relieve the stress of the welds. My own experieince is that I use Pre-Lube 6 to deter rest and oxidation. The best part about this product is that once you have put it on and have wiped off the excess, you cannot tell that there is anything protecting the bare metal.

I did not use the brush or anything abrasive on the half shafts. I painted the green daub on the half shafts and then sprayed them down with Boeshield which "grays" them very slightly. I will post some pictures.
