    1969 hardtop question

Hi all. Looking at an e-bay hardtop, seller says for a 69.

My car was built Jan. 69 and has on the windshield center / top the steel pad for the center latch, and my convertible top has a center latch lever.

The hardtop on e-bay has the 3 front latches that would match my car, and just the two outer rear connections which is also how my car is.

He gave me rear glass codes of:

    DOT 15
    M52
    AS2

I cannot find what a M52 would designate in my reading, can someone help me here to determine if this e-bay hardtop is correct for my car?

    Thanks,

    Doug

There is a 2 letter code for the date right next to those numbers you posted.

Do you believe that a hardtop adds value to your 1969? I am reallly betwixt and between on buying one.

        Hi Paul,

It would be good to have the correct date coded hardtop if you could get it at a reasonable price and didn't have to make costly repairs but it will most likely stay in your storage area much longer than ever on your car.

Yes, agreed. But, if I can find the right one at a good deal I would get it. And I really like the look of the hardtop on the 69's, I would use it in the winter when the weather was clear (yes, I said that, but I've lied before) .

          Thanks, Doug

I fear that that would be its fate. I did commit to one last week but have now backed off. So it is soft top still. I do not drive in winter and in fact my 1974 is now in winter commercial storage until April. Its a "nice to have" but the cost estimates to paint or cover in black vinyl were pretty staggering.

My local GM dealer would not even consider removing the SS trim or the rear window. Too much potential for damage. They wanted to do the old MAACO trick and just tape around things?? And that was $750.00.

              Paul,

Sorry to hear that you did not get the hardtop.
I do use mine from time to time, just for a different look. When on, I do get a bit more headroom than when the ragtop is up. Obviously, the best is when the top is down.

I put my soft top down in May and back up in September. That is my driving season in Canada. I do avoid rainy days if possible. And I normally do. So my use of a hardtop would be minimal. But they sure do look nice. I was very tempted. But not for the price.

Where are the date codes and the numbers on the tops so as to verify the top? Are they the same for 68? Without removing the panels you can check the date code on the glass.

                    Hi Dale,

On the convertible top, the date code is located on the driver side plastic rear window. It will read month and year. Example 1067 is October of 1967. On the Hardtop it will be 2 letters on the rear glass near the logo. Example AZ is A = September Z = 1967.

                    I hope this helps.

Thanks, That is what I thought. You use the glass code so mine is VZ, which would be Dec 1967. There are no other dates on the hard top?.

                        Dale,

There are no other dates on the hardtop or soft top that are judged. Just the glass on the hardtop and the rear window on the convertible top.
