58-62 Gas pedal question what's the bottom flap for??

Was looking at some pictures of both the correct repro and some NOS gas pedals the other day and noticed the extra flap that is part of the rubber at the bottom (which my original is missing). What is the purpose of this extra rubber flap and does anyone use it with that piece attached and have a problem with the carpet interfering??? How does it go in, above or below the carpet?? Don't see any info in the AIM on this.

Thanks in advance for all replies. Dan

Here's a photo of an NOS part showing this flap on the bottom:

That's NORS, not NOS. Your original should not have the flap.

Thanks for that information. I wonder why the reproductions have it.

Reproductions do, or aftermarket parts do? A quick look at Central's catalog under gas pedal says "58-62 correct" and shows no flap.

There were actually FOUR different gas pedals applicable to 1958-62 Corvettes as shown below:

          1958----GM #3748969

          1959----GM #3760271

          1960-62 GM #3771749 (also 58-59 SERVICE)

          1958-62 GM #3820328 (SERVICE-only)

How do they differ? I don't know but I expect the one you picture is the 3820328. If so, it should be so-embossed on the back.

I have a 3820328 that I bought (in the '60s) to replace my '59's original pedal. It is all plastic and very light and has the flap. The original was metal with a rubber facing and a plastic rubbing surface where it contacted the throttle rod.

I have no clue as to what is "original", but from my experience, the one without the flap has a tendency to come over the top and come off the ball studs. My 60' leaks so badly that I run it wothout any carpeting, which also likely makes it a bit more suseptible. If I use the one with the flap, it tends to not do that.

Bill & Joe, thanks for that detailed reply. I did not actually have the part pictured in my hands when I posted this question, I was just working off a picture. Now it makes more sense. Cheers!

I ordered a new gas pedal from the local Chevy dealer and got just exactly what is pictured above. That was in 1971. I never installed it because it was plastic and so different from the original. The original kept coming off as Terry said.

In 1971 a GM dealer would have sold you the GM #3820328 which was a SERVICE-only piece as far as Corvettes were concerned.

I agree. I was rather dissappointed that the original was no longer available.
