    Pilot brushing

I'm looking to purchase a bronze pilot brushing for my m20 muncie transmission, napa has one for $22 plus while advance has one for around $8.00. Is one better than the other? Thats a big difference. Did anyone use either one? Looking forward to the response. Thank you

Bring a magnet with you. The one with no iron content is the one you want. Most have enough iron to attract a magnet. NAPA has good rep and probably sells the pure bronze oilite bushing.

That's what I thought too. I purchased two bushings from NAPA a few months ago. The photo on the website looks like the bushings are oilite bronze. I took a gamble and ordered two ( #B656 about $4.00 a piece ). The good news is they were Made in the USA and the bad news is they are magnetic ( contaminated bronze ). The only place I know that definitely sells the oilite bronze bushings is Autogear. Here's the site: http://www.autogear.net/WhatsNew1.html

This is not a new problem, I found the magnetic bushings about 8 years ago. I got some lakewood bushings from a catalog place that were like that. Went to NAPA and they looked up a bushing for a vette found it was magnetic, then looked up one for a camaro and it was good. Different part number but the same size bushing- go figure. They were $3 at the time.

You should switch to the roller bearing "bushing". GM got rid of the old bushing years ago.

Use of a needle bearing for the shaft pilot requires very accurate alignment between the bell housing and the trans input shaft. Corvettes up until the early eighties were all over the place. Unless someone's willing to use offset bell housing dowel pins from Lakewood and others, as well as shimming for angular misalignment, then one is better off using a bronze bushing, which is more forgiving.
