What's Under The Paint on My '68 Shift Plate?????

Just removed the paint on the shift plate of my '68. Found what appears to some type of Primer...(Reddish Orange) Did they come from the factory like this? I think not, since I did the Ash Tray/Cigarette Lighter Door first, and it was just paint and metal

    Any thoughts?

Also, I'm using SEM Satin Black...The ash tray door looks very nice with two coats. Is this the correct amount?

    Thanks,

I don't think any sort of primer was originally used although I can't say that with certainty. I can say with certainty that I've seen a lot of console plates with chipped/worn black paint and no red primer has ever been seen "showing through".

I agree with Joe, no primer on the shift plate console.

Agreeing with Joe and Jack. Consoles I've re-done showed no primer under the black.

Regarding the multiple coats of black paint, I'd offer that you need to be careful not to get too much paint one the thing. Too much paint and the pebble graining could be lost or reduced to the point it's NTFP.

          Thanks, Joe...

There is not pebble grain on the plate. It's a 68. I've put three coats of SEM Satin, and it looks great...I think that shoudl do it...I didn't put a lot on with each coat
