    New Shifter Console 1968

I just received a new forward console for my '68. I'm pleased with it, but..... I just pulled the two original Radio Side Panels out and next to the Center Console, they are so much darker and glossier.

I'm amazed that they can be that far off...Wondering if the side panels have been hit with a lot of Armor All, or whatever over the years...or, Repainted...Don't know. I ordered the Console in the color, Black...Didn't think it would be this far off

Any suggestions? Should I be painting the Console? I have SEM Landau, but don't want to get into that unless I have to

    Thanks in advance,

    Bob

Bob, I would bet that you will have to paint the side panels, It would be hard to say what the armor all stuff does to the interior paint after years ,I know alot of people use the stuff. I recently did a complete re-dye of a friends 68 convert. its was a bright blue color and the match was nothing like the factory. I just think the paint formulas have changed since they took the lead out of the paint. And nothing will be as the factory did it.

      Hi Ed...

Actually, I was wondering if I should paint the Console....OK, so now I'm real confused...Having jusr purchased the SEM Landau, and not using it yet, do you think it's closer to the Console (Repro Black) or the Original Panels (Original Black?)

Also, looking at the panels attachet to the Console and holding the whole assembly down by your side, like it would be in the car, and the panels being Under The Dash, as it were..it's not as noticeable...Any thought on that?

What part or New England are you from? I'm originally from Ma...

      Thanks for your help,

      Bob

South of Boston. Bill just paint the side panel and the console so they match. I personally have not used the sems product, I have painted my friends 68 and my 72 with corvette america dye products in the spray bombs. and I did the complete interiors. and by the way have held up 4 years on counting with zero issues.

If I were in your shoes just take the old console and paint it and see how it looks with the sems product.

What material are the side panels? Originals were plastic substrate with a vinyl covering, just like the console. Some of the first "reproductions" (which I believe are also still available) are a monolithic plastic with an impressed grain on the outside. These are usually shinier than the originals.

The original side plates and the console matched very well since both were covered with the same vinyl material. They were not ultra-shiny.

              Hi Joe,

Looking at this, it seems to be what you describe..Now, in the center of the piece there are numbers...Never seen anything like this before....They are vertical, and are as follows...

              431
              432
              433
              434
              435
              436
              437
              438
              439
440...EXACTLY like that...and other numbers on the "Tab" that slides under the Console itself. Can't make them out just not, but they're horizontal. Will look with a magnifying glass tomorrow

              Thanks,

              Bob DeSimone
