    Joe,

There is no question in my mind that the "alpha code" (2 letter code) stamped adjacent to the AC part number is the month and the year ("AF" = Jan. 1966, "LF" = Dec. 1966). The earliest code that I have ever seen is "LD" (Dec. 1964) on a "4657" AC fuel pump. I believe that the "alpha code" was not added to the "40083" AC pumps until sometime in 1967.

Dave, the "PT 5623145" is cast into the recessed area on the back side where the pump mounts to the block. Have many pictures, email me & I can sent you some. The "5A" is inside the round area where gasket goes. Also inside is 15324, the number 64 in two spots, a logo "P" inside a diamond. Outside is "MADE U.S.A." no "IN" since part of mold is left at that location. "S" on screws and have old pin/retainer. Also have a believe a "67" pump with similar markings.

        Alan,

Around one or both of the "64" castings there should be "hash" marks (as many as 12) in a clock like fashion. Since the pump came from a March 1964 car I would suspect 1 or 2 "hash" marks (Jan. 1964 or Feb. 1964). You may need to clean the area and use a magnifying glass.

My "64" markings are inside only and yes one has a single dot mark. (see top left)
The pump was removed in 1968 and kept until 2008 when it went back on the car.

Thank you donald that's a good point i'm finding it very hard in finding a metal bottom. Maybe that's the way to go although very expensive would you say? Keep in touch on what you do . Maury

Depending on how correct you want it to be, there a number of unique features to the 40083 pump that are commonly not found in the replacements. The originals were cast of Magnesium, which gives a darker cast to the pump than an aluminum version. Also the originals had two wings to add structure to the dome. I'll get a picture and post it shortly.

                See post #6.

Many of the OP's questions should be answered if he reads my article in the Summer 2010 Restorer.

The OP is long gone. Maybe his questions were answered two months ago.

                  Bill,

I have an original "40394" AC fuel pump (1966 Nova w/L79) that is quite dark so it must also be magnesium as well. It also has the "two wings" as you call them. I would call them "gussets" much like the gusset plates on a structural steel highway bridge.

I would agree, I think I have the top from one of those around also.
