I recently bought a 67 L36 Coupe from the third owner who had owned it 40 years. I have been going over it and correcting the few things that I can find and one is the drivers door lock is inoperable. The car was painted in 1995 and I am assumming the door catch wasremoved and not reinstalled correctly or perhaps something else is wrong? I can't get the key to lock or unlock the lock and I can't get the interior lock to turn from it's unlocked position. I have taken the door panel off and lubricated everything and corrected the key lock which was upside down but other than that I can't find anything else to try and adjust or fix. I was guessing that maybe the catch mechanism has something to do with this? I hate to take that out because the paint in the jambs is in good shape and if I turn those three screws it will crack the paint. Any suggestions?

Re: Door lock inoperable
Lawrence - From your post, I think the door lock assembly operates with the key and the pawl is moving? Correct? So is it that the rod from the door lock is not moving (operating) the door latch mechanism when the door lock assembly is turned from the lock to unlock positions? Pete- Top

Re: Door lock inoperable
Pete,
The pawl will not move because the lock mechanism will not move. If I remove the rod to the lock mechanism from the pawl then yes the key lock will move. The door lock will not move.

Re: Door lock inoperable
Mirror photo.JPGI still have not made any success with trying to fix my lock. The interior lock will not lock or unlock and the key lock will not turn either. There seems to be a common mechanism that is the problem. I don't know if this is installed wrong or if something is broken. I attached a picture of the part I am talking about. You will have to zoom in to see what I am talking about. It is hard to make heads or tails of it honestly.
Any suggestions?

Re: Door lock inoperable
Go to www.licorvette.com and look at part 09-86B and 09-86C, depending on your 67, this part had probably failed. To test it at home, just reverse the part from the other door to make sure that is the failure point.
Good Luck

Checked it out and that part seems to be ok. Maybe part number 09-18? Will compare to the other door tomorrow- Top

Re: Door lock inoperable
I went thru the latches on my 67 the other month, the white grease was so hard and gummed up that the lock pawl wouldn't move at all. It tool a solvent soak and a lot of brake clean while moving the parts to get everything working the way i wanted it to. Every part on the latch assembly was gummed up.
Here's a pic of the lock assy.Attached Files- Top

Re: Door lock inoperable
My 57 was in the same shape as Bill's, only probably worse. The white Lubriplate was also hard as a rock.
After cleaning all the old grease off, I did an overnight soak in Evapo-Rust. Results were amazing! The thing came of the overnight looking brand new!. That is really good stuff, as has been reported by other members.
You can buy this stuff at local auto supply stores like Auto Zone, but at least around here they sell it in quarts only and it is expensive. Tractor Supply has it in 1 gallon jugs, and it is much cheaper.

Re: Door lock inoperable
Soaked my locking mechanism in solvent, cleaned everything up, greased everything now works like new.
Thanks,
