C2 (1965) Side Emblem Speed Nut Finish & Dum Dum Application

What is the correct finish of the side emblem speed nuts and/or any of the other locations? Are they natural/cad/zinc or black? Also I was told by John Ballard at the June North Central Regional that the side emblem speed nuts should have "dum dum" or strip caulking between the speed nut and the body surface when they are installed. Was this correct when the factory installed them?

    Thanks,

Jim, all my emblems had the dum-dum on them when removed for cleaning & I've owned the car since Aug67,
its a Mar64 car Now as for the size and finish - haven't a clue since they are really old.

Actually the nuts have an indentation or cut out on some of the hex sides. They are not a typical hex speed nut.

Anyone have a picture of these speed nuts with the indentation or cut out?

          James,

The image attached is from an e-bay auction for what are claimed to be correct speed nuts for up to '64. Hopefuly someone else can verify or not.

            James,

I'm not sure if there is an exact correct style/design or plating color. I have quite a few from 63-65's from decades ago and some are black and some are gold colored plating.

Some have three small notches cut out of the outer rim and others don't.

The outer dimension on most is around .625". (5/8") Some are smaller, around 1/2".

I have only seen three notches on the larger size.

I have a feeling that several vendor were supplying these nuts to GM as they were used throughout all of their car lines so millions were used every year.

I think the part number changed at some point around 1964 but I'm not sure??

Most that I've seen from 63's do not have the calk filled back side.

The one's on my car (Mar64) are the style as shown by Michael. I do however recall the dum-dum being present on all emblems.

Here's what's in my loose collection. Those turned upside down on the left are the only ones showing dum-dum, or traces of. The small one that looks like a doughnut has a 5/16" hex on the top side, and (IIRC) was the type used for the small pins on the rear deck emblem.

Comments on two photos: Michael Hanson photo has three speed nuts. The correct ones for at least 63 is the speed nut in the center that has three notches
Wayne has a mess of them in his photo. The shiny ones, etc. All have the 3 notches.

Now if Jorjorian would put up a nice pic that would settle this issue. He is the one that taught me about these notched speed nuts in the first place.
Probably too early here though. Mean while the question is for '65 speed nuts-not '63.

                      John,

The photo I posted is from an e-bay auction by jojo63 with the title "56-64 Corvette Emblem Mount Speed Nut, Correct.". Are those in that photo not really "correct", as his title states?

                        Gary,
I can tell you I have many emblems with nuts taken off what I considered original 63s.
ALL were the style that is pictured in the middle of Michael Hanson's photo with the three notches.

                          Gary,

I've never seen any originals from 63-65 that look like the ones the ebay poster shows.

                            Bob,

I agree, the nut with the three notches seems to be the most common for 63 side fender flag and FI emblems. Most that I've seen for 63 were gold colored. Both used nut part number 274754.

I'm not sure but I think that part number changed for 64 or 65. I don't know what the change was but possibly the use of the style nut that had sealer on the back side? Seems 64's were black, as I remember.
