    1967 steering column adjustment - non-telescopic

    Hi,

I'm re-installing this column and everything went well, except when I placed the bezel that goes up against the dashboard, it is about 1/2 too low to line up flush with the bottom of the dash. I see adjustments side to side and in and out, but nothing that can adjust up and down to help me line this bezel up.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Jerry

    Jerry,

Loosen the U-bolt just behind the bezel and slide it toward you (the steering wheel). You may have to loosen the clamp at the firewall around the column. There is just enough adjustment to raise the column so the bezel will fit. Install the two screws on the bottom of the bezel. Then tighten the nuts on the U-bolt and your done.

      Joe,

      The 67 doesn't have that U Bolt.

      Thanks

        Jerry -

No, it doesn't. However, the intermediate column support bracket (see your Assembly Manual, UPC 9, sheet A4 and the photo below), item #10, fits between the bottom of the pedal support (with four loose bolts and nuts) and the three shear capsules on the support that's welded to the steering column. The angles where they meet are such that when you move the bracket (item #10) fore-aft (the bolt holes in the pedal support are slotted), it raises or lowers the column relative to where the column escutcheon fits into the opening in the instrument cluster.

Assemble the column with the three column capsule bracket-to-intermediate bracket bolts finger-tight and the four intermediate bracket-to-pedal support bolts and nuts finger-tight, and slide the intermediate bracket (#10) fore-aft to establish the fit to the cluster, then tighten all seven bolts. There's a sheet missing from all the '67 Assembly Manuals (UPC 9, sheet A5 or A6) that describes this assembly procedure, as the new-for-'67 energy-absorbing steering column and its mounting and installation is completely different from the '66 column.

          John,

Thanks for the advice. I see that procedure and tried it. But my guess is that I didn't give it much time to work through the adjustment process as a little frustration set in! I'll work through it as you verified that I was doing it the correct way.

              Jerry,

Oops, my bad! But the same procedure will work as the bracket welded to the column has slotted holes made for that adjustment. You will have to loosen the clamp where the column tube goes thru the firewall to make the adjustment. As Jeff said above, loosen everything, make the adjustment, tighten the bezel to the instrument cluster and then tighten everything down.
Good luck and sorry to mislead you.
