Correct Grease for C2 Starter Rebuild

I am rebuilding my 1965 Corvette starter motor, replacing the over-run clutch etc. The Corvette shop manual recommends a No. 20 grease for lubricating the moving parts. What would be an acceptable grease that I can buy at my local NAPA store to use in place of the No. 20 grease? I have some multi-purpose SD polyurea grease rated for severe duty, high temperature, extreme pressure with an operating temperature of -15 degrees F to 350 degrees F (NLGI grade No.2 certified NLGI GC-LB performance).

    Good enough?

    Thanks,

    James West

I've used the red wheel bearing grease and it seems to work just fine.

GM 1960954, if you can find any. It was discontinued some time ago.

It doesn't matter that much, James. For this type of application, I prefer a molybdenum based grease with graphite. The one I have in stock is called Moly-Graph and it's made by Sta-lube. The other one I like is also a Sta-lube product, and it's an alumunim complex grease (it's also black). Like the regular lithium based wheel bearing greases, these are NLGI#2 rated. The reason why I like these types of greases is that they appear to be less viscous, even though they're viscosity ratings are the same. It seems that they flow better over the part and protect it better.

But like I said before, a starter doesn't run for long periods, so it really does'nt matter.

            James,
            Paul said it the best.

I just fineshed 7 this week and that works for me.

Yes 7, I was tired of seeing them on the shelf and that saves set up time.

Interesting. My 1960954 is a very dark grey. I've had it for about 15 years.

Like the text says on the bucket, it's great for the tach drive gears and the grease well under the dist. breaker plate in addition to starter motor and generator bushings.

The stuff is very slippery - not tacky like wheel bearing grease.
