original spare tire Member # 38533 Harry Lombardo 1965 coupe

I have an original spare tire, US Royal (Laredo) size 7.75-15 with a 1" white wall. I was going to use it for my spare and buy 4 new reproduction matching bias ply tires. Coker and kelsey tire tell me this tire is not available. Will I loose many points using non ,matching reproduction bias ply tires.

    Thanks: Harry

Harry, it my understanding that the spare does not have to match the road tires. some else maybe able to tell you which repro tires are the closest for judging reasons.

Harry - Per the NCRS Corvette Judging Reference Manual ("JRM"), 8th Edition Standard deduction Guidelines July 2011 (Rev. 4.0), 3.0 Tires.

No Originality Deduction: Four (4) matching Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) tires as described in the appropriate year TIMJG and one (1) matching, or non-matching, OEM spare tire.

Note that there is a 10% deduct for Reproduction OEM brand size tires which differ from originality only because of federally required Department of Transportation (DOT)
        marking.

Bottom line is the spare does not have to match the road tires. Judges love to see original spares.

          Harry,

Spare does NOT need to match. If the spare is indeed the NON-DOT original, then lucky you! You should NOT lose any points for ORIGINALITY and depending on CONDITION no points lost either. The closest to the original will be any bias-ply OEM tire for 1965. Obviously, Laredo is not because that is what you stated. I don't have 1965 TIM&JG in front of me, so don't know who those OEM were. But if you get four matching bias-ply OEM tires, you should only lose THREE points for ORIGINALITY and nothing for CONDITION if memory serves, which is getting worse! (VBG)

Your tires are worth 30 points. The standard deduction for original (repro) tires with DOT is 10 percent ( 3 points ). The Judging guide says that all percentages are based upon 5 tires. So if you have a real spare, then divide the 10% by the 5 tires and you get a standard deduction of 2% per tire or ( 2.4 points ) Round down you get ( 2 points ).

I always see a 3 point deduction, does anyone do 2 points?

                    Harry,
Yes I have seen 2 point deductions for those with an Original Non-DOT spare. I OJ'd at the Pitt Regional this year and that is exactly what we did for those cars that had an original spare tire.

Rick, check the Judging Ref. Manual. Version 8 says 5 tires, unless I read it wrong.

Harry, Yes the spare can be separate and of a different manufacturer from the 4 road tires if it is an original tire. However, the tire you specified in your original post is not the correct size tire for a 63 or 64 Corvette. Your tire size should be 6.70-15.
Also, most judges who are well edjucated in CDCIF and believe in helping the owner will only take 2 points if the original spare is present.

Yepper, HArry S and Joe are correct! Said in my post did not have JG or JRM in front of me, and CRS is rampant! I was quoting "old" information when the spare was a separate line item completely, and there was a standard deduction of THREE points for the four tires on the ground. Now all FIVE tires are on same line.
