In the garage!! Shame!!. Come on, be a sport and get a little tingle out of living dangerously like we did back in the day. Today's cars may be safer, but they were a lot more fun before Ralph wuss Nader and the lawyers got involved.

I've said this many times before: driving any 1963-74 Corvette has serious risks associated with it and a rear end collision with fuel tank rupture is right at the top of that list. Maybe that's why I've been so tardy in finishing up my 1969----as long as it's confined to the garage I don't run this risk.
Joe, with your right foot to the floor, I don't think anybody would be able to hit you in the rear!

Yes, for a LOT of years. 1975-77 Corvettes use a fuel tank with a separate bladder that can be removed and replaced. This tank has been reproduced for several years but the bladder was not. I believe I read somewhere that the bladder is now being reproduced.

1978-82 Corvettes used a fuel tank that had an integral (non-removable) bladder.

All 1984-96 Corvettes used a fuel tank with an integral bladder.

I believe C5 and C6 tanks are plastic but I would expect they have an integral bladder, too.

Does anyone know if one of these later fuel tanks can be installed without major modification in an earlier model C2/C3?

In my view, driving defensively includes the use of a heavy right foot to stay away from the jerks. If I find myself in a gaggle of cars on the highway, I use every way possible to get out of the pack and away from them as quick as I can. That's the advantage one has with a performance vehicle - and I use it. Coming back from Old Town on cruise nights using the 417 greenway, I hope to find a sheriff car to draft as they always run about 80 to 85 mph and don't seem to mind my tag along. Can't say the same for the state boys. They take their job too seriously. (This has worked for me for nearly 57 years).

It's possible the 1975-77 tank could be installed in earlier Corvettes.

I don't think it would be possible to install the 78-82 tank in earlier cars. It was a significantly larger tank (25 gallons) and it had a "hump" on the top.

I don't think the 84-96 tank would fit, at all. I believe it's too wide to fit in any earlier Corvette.

Seems like I remember, when I was watching my 2012 being made, that they have two 9 gallon plastic type gas tanks that are split apart, but connected together, and mounted on either side of the driveshaft. Not sure about a bladder inside.

A lot of people don't know that there is a note in the owners manual concerning the spare tire and carrier on 1975 era Corvettes. The note says that a fully inflated spare tire and carrier is an integral part of the energy management system in a severe rear end collision.

Well if you can get over the crazy need to be "correct" vs safe and alive.....fuel cells are custom made all the time. I have one in my 64 race car. Fits right in old location. A Blatter can also be made to go inside a stock tank. Just a thought. Jerry

I am also a member of the Az chapter of the NCRS. Maybe the chapter could send members a add. to send cards to when Jim get out of the coma.
PS I don't think people here are taking light of the accident but having a honest discussion about safety of our Corvettes.
