    63 spare tire carrier

I have a 63 coupe built May 63. I have no spare tire carrier tub, brackets or any part of the assembly. I gather from searching that the 63 is different from early 63 and 64-67. Does anyone know what the differences are and where to get a correct one(entire assembly, v bracket tub, cover, etc). Thank you, JOe

I would first contact Scott Sinclair. Scott repairs/rebuilds these tubs, and probably has a few originals in inventory.

It is hard for me to point out all of the differences, but one of the main ones is the lip on the edge of the tub. The 1963 version barely has this lip, if at all. The lip is much more pronounced in the later version(s). Probably the best way is to go on Ebay and search for "corvette tire tubs" or something similar. There are generally pictures of both 1963 and 1964-67 versions. You can them compare.

Sermersheims produces reproduction tubs, and is probably the best out there. Contact them if Scott doesn't have anything original for you.

do you know if the v bracket and frame holes are the same or different? in other words can a 64-67 carrier be mounted on a 63?

Yes, the 64-67 tub can be installed in a 63 without any modifications.

Joe, one other minor difference is the rear bolts that hold the v bracket. They have a nut that is welded to the threads on the bolt, later years did not.

Joe, to add to Ed, depending on your build date I believe there were three different forward bolt designs and two different aft bolt designs.

                  Joe:

My copy of the 1963-64 Judging Manual has much of this info. Listed in EXTERIOR SECTION under "Spare Tire Stowage". It appears that the change from early style tub to later style tub occurred around VIN #14,000 or around very late April 1963. Other details are also mentioned/discussed.

I am certain that Noland's Book on C2 Restoration will also have further/additional information.

                    Re: 63 spare tire carrier

Neither Noland's book, nor the new '63 JG address the complete tub design. I am still confused as to what is correct for a late '63 car.

                    1. The JG says cars after VIN 14000 have the higher (1" lip). However, it does not address whether the 2 notches that were cut out for the bracket were done on all cars with the higher lip.
                    2. Most people insist the '63 has no notches cut out and those are found on 64-67.
                    3. So, is the JG indicating that late '63s had a high lip AND the notches cut out, or that there's a "late 63 version only" that features the high lip but NO notches cut out?

I have a friend with a late May car and it has what he's sure is an original tub with the short/no lip. I have never seen a higher lip tub, without the notches cut.

Here is the original tub off my late May '63 coupe...
It had been painted "barbecue grill" black and I stripped it when I snapped these...

                        Thanks, Frankie.

I still cannot get an answer re: late '63 having a lip + notches (as suggested by the JG) vs all '63s not having notches.

                          Re: 63 spare tire carrier

I've had two 63's later than 14000 and both had no lip/notches. One was an original owner car and the other was never restored. The rear hanger was like the one in Dreano's pic. The front hangers did not have the first design with the nut on the bottom but did have the nut welded. Also they were zinc plated! I have a pair of first design and the later design. Pics to follow if you need them.

That's helpful Joe, thank you. I've not spoken to a '63 owner yet with a later design tub on their '63.
