    65 coupe interior gloss black

I know this question has been asked on this forum before. I have spent alot of time looking through the archives for this answer and can't find a difinitive answer. I have an R-M jobber looking for the answer also with no luck. My question is does anyone know the formula crossover for the gloss color for the interior black in a 65 coupe. I know the ditzler code from the auto-library is DL-9248,the jobber can't cross it to a current paint.I'am sure alot of people have found this paint and passed NCRS scrutinty. Any and all help is welcome, I'm getting close to finishing my interior. Thanks

The 1965 Corvette interior refinish paint chart calls for Ditzler lacqueur DL-9248 (as you mention). That is for the 60 gloss. The other suppliers' codes for this gloss are DuPont (Acrylic) 88; and Rinshed-Mason [RM] (Std Lacqueur) A-946.

But there are two black glosses used for '65 Corvette interiors, depending on the location. The other (3 gloss) is Dupont 4466-L; [no RM code], and Ditzler DL-9292.

In the day they were done in black lacquer. Every company had a black lacquer. Raw lacquer is considered to be 60% gloss with no buffing. Granted there can be a lot of variances with the speed of the thinner and the rate of application, but those parts, that had a little sheen, were just plain raw lacquer. Some parts of the interior were 30% gloss or 3% gloss. Those were the same lacquer black with flattening agent added. Upper dash parts were low gloss to reduce glare.

Today most paints are urethane or base coats with urethane clear. Straight single stage urethane shoots out very glossy, so to match the raw 60% lacquer you have to flatten it. To get the 30% and 3% need a bunch of flattener.

So you see, you don't need a formula, just the paint and the flattener to mix your own.

        Wayne,

Do those same paint codes and gloss levels hold for black on the interior for '66?

Gary --- almost. Here's the same table from the 1966 New Product book. The RM code for 60 gloss seems to have added a "#400-" before the A-946. I'd guess it's the same.

            Wayne,

The # sign likely points to a footnote, as does the dagger two lines below. But the footnotes don't appear in the image of that page.

Gary -- I checked the source document (Chev Service News) and I see that for Caprice stripes it says #400 or A-946; same for truck interiors. Those two dagger lines are my doing -- actually a lowercase letter "v" that I use as a spacer in case I want to delete or add another full-size pic from my Photobucket acct. [there -- changed it to an 's']

              I didn't see any footnotes.
