    C2 SHP Timing Cover

I've searched the archives but can't find any posts delaing with the correct configuration of the timing chain cover for 'the 64 SHP engine with 8" finned balancer and the pointer on that balancer. The Judging Guide does not seem to cover this area but I suspect that the judges know what it is supposed to look like. Can anybody show some photos?

    Thanks-Doug

Doug, I know Michael Hanson has a good photo of the tabs, hope he chimes in.

Doug -- If the '63/64 JG is like the '65, then discussion of timing covers and tabs is (hidden ) in Section 2: Cylinder case 2nd paragraph (harmonic balancer). Bob Jojorian had two pics that said it all. Apparently (for 8" balancers) there was a change of tab tack welded inward up to mid-'64, then outward afterwards. Can post them if nobody else has them or similar.

Check out the similar threads links at the bottom of your post. Believe some had associated pictures but I don't see them now.

        Hi Wayne,
I reviewed all of those similar posts but only one has a photo and it shows the tab only. That post was about '63s which may be the same as '64s but I'm not positive about that. Still hoping someone will respond.

          Re: C2 SHP Timing Cover

Doug, I know the main problem was the 62 and 63s tabs were from smaller diameter balancers which resulted in closer marks not corresponding to the degrees of the 8 inch balancer on the SHP/FI engines. I believe the 64 tabs were corrected to show correct degrees on the tab. Sooo, if you have the 64 tab it should be correct, need a picture to be sure. Micheal had a nice side by side comparison, hope it will show up for you.

            Doug,

As mentioned by others, the timing tab for 8" damper, and it's method of attachment, changed at some point in early 1964 production. You can see in Bob Jorjorians pictures that the distance between timing marks changed from the 62-64 early to the later 64 and later.
Also, the portion of the late 64 timing plate that is spot welded to the cover is folded opposite that of the 62-E64.

I don't know exactly when the change occured.

The tab on 62-E64 for 8" dampers was actually designed for a 6" damper. Someone eventually discovered and corrected the problem.

              Hi Dan,
I found threads showing a square tab and a pointed tab. Not certain which is correct but just as important I have 2 covers and they are different. Neither has a tab. The tab I have on the engine now attaches with 2 of the cover bolts. I plan to look for a correct cover but need to know about both the cover style and the tabs. I think the cover with the pie-slice stampings is correct but not certain.

Doug here is an original timing chain cover from a MAR64 car, the weld is to the inside.
Sorry about quality of picture - it was hard just to get this poor one.

I think I have a good original SHP cover that matches picture above, the one on the right. But will have to check. I do not know which one Michael is referring to as the early, and the late. PM if you are interested.
