Neat find! Someday when you gently, gently remove some of the dirt and grim from your spare tire, look for a molded 8-digit alphanumeric code in the outer sidewall near the rim. I have a chart for Goodyear tires manufactured in 1970 and 1971 which breaksdown the code (i.e. week of manufacture, tire size, tire configuration (BW, RWL, WS) and plant location). I have no doubt your spare is correct, but it would be kind of cool to verify the spare, versus the build date of your car.

I tried to post the documents on this thread, but forum told me the files were too big to upload. I'm not that great at comuters to make it work. I could email them to you offline.

    Marc,
Just a slight addition/clarification to your post. From Glen's profile he has a 1972 car so you would have the so called "long code" which phased in during the first 5 or 6 months of calender year 1971. Prior to that time period the alphanumeric number was 8 digits. I believe the long code is an alphanumeric string of 11 digits with the last 3 being the week (2 digits) and year (1 digit). Being a 1972 MY tire the last digit would be a 1 (1971) or a 2 (1972). You can decode dates of modern tires the same way.

As Dave said. I like this one, but there are others on line, per Google:

        Dave,
Thanks! You are exactly correct. Sometime in '71 the longer DOT code replaced the TIC code.

          Marc,
At one point it was thought that the tire code change to the long code was mandated to be begin in January 1971. As more tires were seen it was noted that some still had the "short" codes into the spring of 1971. My July built 1971 has an original spare that is dated June 1971 and it has the "short" code. Fortunately it is a Goodyear so it can be de-coded.
