Late 67 427 dip stick color

in the manual it states that all 67 427 cars had a salmon tip. but in the Paragon parts book it states the late cars after may had a white tip. I have pictures of the car before disassemble but they are over developed to see. and the the dip stick it self is missing in action. thanks

I don't know exactly when it started (probably no one does) but very late in the 1967 model year the dipstick changed for 427's. The new dipstick was fitted with a white plastic plug. I would say that May, 1967 is probably ABOUT right.

Are you sure that it always had that dipstick?

Dipsticks are pretty "portable". Plus, I wonder how many cars have been shorn of their original configuration in order to make them "correct". In this case, the JG apparently states that all 1967's had the salmon-tipped dipstick. It could be that some previous owner took that 100% seriously. Of course, if you've owned this car for a VERY long time, that would be unlikely.

Re: Late 67 427 dip stick color

I bought the car from a 77 year old gentleman in 2003. He bought it in 1977 and only put about 2000 miles on it. It retains most all of it's original part's and is a pretty correct car.
I also know that almost anything is possible and that it could have been changed. Who Knows???

Joe and William thanks for the reply. but have you seen any other June built 427s with the white tip. Is this issue being looked at for the next judging manual? If I use a white tip will I get docked on the field. and Joe do you have a GM paper stating when the change over occurred

The change in the AIM from the GM #3860318 (salmon plug) to the 3925520 (white plug) is dated 3/5/67. Given the 3925520 part number my guess would be that this was a part that was "rushed" into manufacture, possibly to correct some problem associated with the 3860318. The only difference I can determine between the 3860318 and 3925520 is a slight difference in the location of the "add" mark. The 3925520 also became SERVICE for all 1965-67 Corvettes implying that the revision was considered an "improvement".

I checked with a friend in Texas who has a 5 Star Bow Tie 67/390 with a engine stamp of 06 06, same day as my car, and it also has a salmon tip??

Keith just as a side note. If I'm confidant that a part on my car is original to the car. I will not change it just to conform to the JM. In this case I would think that the tip color would be only 1 point. Just my 2 cents worth.
