Should the vacuum advance be removed and pluged. My chasis run good but cranks really slow when hot on restart. Seems like timing is off. It should crank quickly. My battery is fresh, cant be that. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Re: timing the 6 cyl, 54
Vacuum advance is inop during cranking, it's primary function is to improve fuel economy, 6Volt systems are very sensitive to the condition of electrical connections and grounds as well as the sizing of the battery cables. Would suggest you check the low voltage side completely for proper cable sizes, clean connections and the like before going drastic.Bill Clupper #618- Top

freshly rebuilt 235's are also famous for slower than normal cranking speeds, in addition to the items clup discussed in the above post. if your blue flame is indeed fresly rebuilt, it'll loosen up in a couple thousand miles. mike- Top

Re: timing the 6 cyl, 54
The standard chevy service manual is silent on the need to remove the vacuum line for timing. I take it that the line remains connected, but I also would appreciate some confirmation, as I was always told to pull the vacuum line to time a V-8.- Top

Mine cranked slow also. I had a brand new battery from autozone with 450CCA, after 4 years I needed a new battery. This new one has 575CCA. Cranks alot faster. Mine always started with the old battery but it had me worried a few times when hot. I just thought that was the way of the world with a 6 volt. New battery, new life.- Top

Set timing with no vac advance, then reconnect and set hot idle speed.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: timing the 6 cyl, 54
Thanks for all the great advice guys, this cranks normally when cold, the battery has 640 CCA but hot cranking is dreadfully slow. Fresh starter. It starts to speed up after starting to crank and then it will start, Runs great when warmed up. Everything on this chasis is new. I understand this thing isnt close to being broke in. Runs thru the gears great. On imediate start up after shutdown it starts quickly. Give it 15 minutes and slow go cranking. My lawn mower does that. Who knows. I want to feel confident that when it comes time to drive the thing it wont let me down. Every thing lines up, points to #1 when the ball lines up with the pointer. Not really a whole lot of adjustment in the distributer.- Top
