Door Lock Spring Clip

What's the secret to installing the outside door lock? The spring steel clip has to be compressed in order to lock into the nubs on the lock cylinder, and this thing has an attitude.

How do you guys do it?

You're not using a rubber gasket, are you?

Yes I am. Is that the reason? Did they not have a gasket when new?

No, there was no gasket - only the stainless escutcheon. The parts vendors think they used rubber gaskets under the escutcheon, but they didn't. See your Assembly Manual, section F, sheet 7.00.

Okay, thanks John, the gasket will die today. I know there was no gasket when I took them apart, did not give it a thought. I had the AIM pages right in front of me when I was doing this and it still blew right over my old brain dead head.

i run the rusty spring clip thru the wire wheel on the grinder, then lubricate it with never-seez. they go right in IFF there hasn't been an increase in the thickness of the door skin in that area(bondo etc).mike

Hi Mike,

I ran both rusty spring clips through gentle rust remover, painted them black, and lubed them with chassis grease. There is no bondo build-up, but I was using the aftermarket rubber washers. John pointed this out to me, and I will throw away the washers today and that should solve my problem. Monkeyed around with it yesterday until I was totally frustrated and then gave up and posted this thread.
