While original engine is rebuilt, I've installed GM crate 350 w/alterator. Can't get temp or fuel gauges to work. I added 2nd grnd wire, no luck. FYI, tank is only 5 yrs old. I've also noticed brake lights come & go when my steering col. (blinker) is moved up & down. Thanks

Both of those gauges need 12 volts, and they get it from the same circuit (pink wires, fed from the third fuse from the top in the fuse block); same fuse feeds the yellow power wire to the radio.
Your brake lights are intermittent because the turn signal switch isn't cancelling/centering completely from either direction; the turn signal switch controls when the brake lights get power. Very common/chronic C1 problem - pull the steering wheel and clean/lubricate the cancelling mechanism operated by the turn signal lever.- Top
