    Goodyear GT Radial

I have a set of four GOODYEAR GT RADIAL FLEXTEN CUSTOMGARD OWL GR225/70R15 all with DOT CODE MKU5 2ST126 were these tires ever used as original equipment on any C-3 Corvettes or are they of any value for C-3 NCRS judging? Is the DOT date code Dec 76, 86 96 ??? Can someone decode them for me? Thanks in advance.

The only part I can answer is about the date code: That is the 12th week of 76, 86, 96. One would need a calendar for those years, which are available on the web, to determine what dates were in the 12th week of those years.

More information about date codes from 1971 to now:

Thanks Terry, I forgot that the 12 in the code is in weeks not months. Also, after the last letter in the DOT code is a small circle with a vertical slash mark through it, but I think this is just an imprint of the attaching device.

As far as I know, that tire was only used OEM in the 255/60 15 size as an option in 78 and 79. Replaced by the "Eagle GT" in 80. The 225/70 15 tires were "Polysteel" . I would guess that your date code is 86, but I thought they were already discontinued by then. I don't think they were available before 78, but I could be wrong. Any way, I would toss them out to make room in the shop! Chip.

Terry & Paul, Thanks for your input. They are such good looking tires 10/32" tread & no cracking. They won't work on my mid years, but they will fit my GTO or Firebird, for display only!

Most interesting tire configuration...a GT Radial in a P225/R7015 series. Can't disagree with anything that has been posted but would love to see some photos of both tire and DOT code with great resolution. I'll assume the tire DOT code stencil was a single stencil. In the 80's codes got longer and manufacturers began to break up the stencil. You'll see in the link below, a "modern" GT Radial reproduced by Kelsey in the P255 series with the stencil in three segments (date code = 2009). Also I take it the DOT code is on the inboard side. Is there a TPC code on the tire? Indicates an OEM tire versus service replacement.

If I were to guess with that date code and P series, I would say it was intended for some other sports car platform and later expanded to the P255 series unique to the 1978-79 Corvette. Safe to say...this tire was not a Corvette OEM tire.

Glen, I would agree with that evaluation of what you describe, but would be more comfortable with a photo. Generally these code plates were fastened into the mold with a slot head screw (at each end), and that screw image is what you are seeing -- of course it is the reverse of the screw head. Sometimes, as Tom describes farther on, these plates were made in multiples as he describes. In those cases there is a screw head at each end of each plate.
