screw in an oil pressure gauge on the drivers side
    watch your gauge

    Disconnect your coil
Spin the motor over while running the drill.....
that way you get oil thru all the passages....

      Thanks Chris,
I do have a gauge hooked up to the little start up panel that I could have someone watching while I spin the pump with the drill. Just looking for some indication of a pressure reading correct.

I am not sure you want to spinn the motor as this will turn the camshaft. There are a lot of recommendations to get the motor started quickly to get oil to the cam ASAP, expeciall with flat tappet cams. Spinning the motor may be OK, if you have oil flowing first. I have not quite thought through the spinning as it relates to getting oil through all of the passages. Other thoughts?

these motors have such low valve spring pressure - no way your going to wipe a cam in one of these low compression engines....
by turning the motor over - the holes in the crank holes and bearing holes will allow oil to flow through out all the oil passages....
Many professional builders do the exact same thing....

Re: 54 - How to Fill Carb Fuel Bowls for First Start Up

I though when building an engine some special thick oil was used on all the iron on iron part surfaces. Why is pre-running the oil pump then needed?

              regards,
              Rob.

one - it primes the oil pump - so at start up - you have instant oil pressure
two - it lubricates all the moving parts prior to start up

                good insurance....
