    C4 Overheating?

96 Collector Edition 6 sp runs at 185 degrees then at idle it creeps up to 230 before 2 electric fans kick in and take it back to 220, fans shut off and it creeps back towards 230. Also, we had hood up to watch fans, but with hood down it only goes to about 220 max. Do I have an overheating problem? Thanks

Dave, Its sounds like a normal temp. most electric cooling fan don't come on til about that temp. your service manuel should spell out the exact temp. the computer turns them on,There where many changes over the years for C4 cars but generally no more that plus or minus 5 degrees.

Most car when in idle for extended periods with a/c on and higher outside temps will cause the car to run higher than normal temps such as what you are seeing. the main thing is the themostat is opening and the electric cooling fans are turning on and off. If you were seeing the fans to run constantly, then theres a problem.

Except for when the A/C is on, in which case the fans run constantly.

My '85 with digital gauges has always shown the fans to kick in at 227 degrees, and to cycle off at 195. Only takes about a minute to pull the coolant temp down those 32 degrees.

        Dave,

I experienced the same thing when I had a 92. If I was in traffic I would put the air on and it would turn the fan on and keep the temp lower

As C4 expert Gordon Killebrew has said for years regarding C4's, if the engine starts to overheat, don't turn the A/C off, TURN IT ON!

                Re: C4 Overheating?

Yep, normal for all LT1/4's. Depending on the year, the ECM or PCM turns the primary fan on at 220 to 226, approximately and the secondary at 235 (differs a bit by year). The ECM/PCM also uses inputs from the oil temp sensor and the a/c pressure sensor (which is why the fans come on when you turn on the a/c).

Check for trash and dirt between radiator and condenser, being bottom feeders C4's are prone to blockage.

                      C4s run hot, it's normal.
