Oil Dipstick Tube Broke Flush and Needs To Be Removed

    Re-post wrong title:

The oil fill tube on the '61 broke flush with the block after finishing up some other repairs. Is there a fairly simple and painless way to fix this?

Will oil come out of the block tube if I start or drive the car? Attached is a photo of the break.

Larry, the way I done this in the past is find a self tapping screw that will thread into the old dip stick. And try a screwdriver and pry up,If you have a extra hand put a vise grip on the head of bolt and pull up at the same time. Good luck Ed

Larry, look in the archives under lower dip stick removal. I had a post with a picture of what I did to remove the lower dip stick tube which would be the same for the upper one. I posted a photograph showing a lag screw I obtained from Lowe's screwed into the tube with vice grips attached to the upper end of the screw. I used a hammer to tap the vice grips and remove the tube. Hope it helps. Brooks Glover (2141)

I used a tap -- I think 3/8-16 fit, but you will need to verify the size before you proceed. I tapped the piece of dipstick and then ran a bolt in with a lot of washers to use the bolt as a sort of jack to pull the remains out. I knew there was a risk of some material getting into the oil, so I changed oil after this operation.

Whichever method you use, be sure to pack the dipstick cavity with grease which will catch any falling debris.

Still haven't got it to budge. Is there a way to plug the hole while I drive it to a shop? That will be my last resort

There isn't a lot of pressure on the oil there. I suspect even a pencil, if it is big enough around, would do it.

if the engine has a PCV system there should be a vacuum at the dip stick tube

                      clem------

                      It's a 1961 and 1961 did not have PCV.

Addendum-----I just thought of something and you could be right. It's possible that PCV was ADDED to the car. If it was ever registered in California it would have to have been added. Other states might be the same.

Thanks Guys! Got the tube out wit the easy out method. Can the new tube be put in without removing the exhaust manifold? Seems pretty tight between the steering shaft and manifold. Any tips?

put the new one into your freezer over night and it will almost fall into the block

If you have to hammer the new tube in find a box wrench that will just fit over the tube. Hit the wrench with a long drift pin don't hammer on the tube. I think the idea of freezing the tube mentioned above is worth trying it may work well.
