Does anyone know how to replace the black plastic flexable tubing that goes over both inner and outer seat belt cables? I thought about some type of shrink wrap, but it would have to be so large to go over the end I don't think it would shrink to the correct size. Advice??

Re: 67 seat belt cables
Pull one end of the cable out of the back side of one of the bracket loops. Trim the shrink sleeve length so a little cable is left on each end of the black plastic "tube". Slide the shrink sleeve over the ball, and heat it up. When it cools, slide the one bracket (that you moved to the other end) over the cable and the shrunken black sleeve.https://MichiganNCRS.org

Joseph,
I would recommend that you use an extra thick high shrink ratio tubing for this application. Check out www.mcmaster.com for info and sizes.- Top

Terry: Remember, the pulled back loop has to pass over the shrink material (once on the cable) after thermo-setting. I have a multiple size kit of thin sleeves designed for electrical wires. I will add the size I used later, but it was thin...https://MichiganNCRS.org

Re: 67 seat belt cables
I don't disagree Tom. That said, one might be concerned with the shrink ratio for the various tubing types. Standard shrink tube has a 2:1 ratio. High shrink tubing is 4:1 but you may be limited to a 1" size (before shrinking). Extra thick high ratio shrink tubing has a 6:1 ratio. A 3/4" tube will shrink to a minimum ID of 0.13" with a minimum wall thickness of 0.12". So, you can probably add 0.24" to the diameter of the cables and then verify if the new cable diameter will fit through the steel loop. I still think a higher ratio shrink tubing would be better for a snug fit around the cable. The shrink tube size must be large enough to go over the cable ball. Maybe do a little measuring and research to determine what is best. Pretty easy to re-do it if something goes wrong.- Top

Joesph:
I used a 1/2 diameter, 3:1 shrink ratio, that gave me a final dimension of .16". The Manufacturer p/n is Qualtex Q2-F3x-1/2-01-QB48. The length is 48" long. I bought it from Newark electronics. If you give me a day, I think I have some left that I can send. I was going to cut of the rest to have some "kits" around. I have a pdf writeup that I did that that talks about seat belt restoration, and how to fold the oversize heat shrink to thread it into the hole. I don't know how to attach the file to this reply,so if you're interested send me a note.NCRS New England Chapter Chairman 2022, 2024
