    62 spare cover board

I'm looking for a 5 ply black washed cover board ( with no birds eyes ) for my 62. The ones I've seen are either painted jet black so you can not see the grain of the wood or they have birds eyes. Thank you for your help. Joe

If you can find one thats correct but painted black get it and wipe it with lacquer thinner to remove some of the paint.

Why no birds eyes? Football shaped inserts were there, even in 1956.

          Re: 62 spare cover board

I have heard that birds eyes were in some of the original boards; and that footballs were not allowed; but when I was in Kissimmee 2 years ago I was present when a car was being judged and got dinged for them. Not being well versed I took that to mean no birds eyes ergo the post. But I think they are inevitable and will end up getting my car judged with one and I will post the results. Thank you all for your help. Joe

I've owned my 62 (#2262) for 40+ years and it has the original spare tire cover with birds eyes. Rich

What's a birds eye in plywood? Same thing as football or something else?

I think I know what is meant by "football," but "birds eye" eludes me. Pictures, anyone?

                  Re: 62 spare cover board

When I was at the Kissimmee event a couple of years ago what I saw was a fooball shape in the board and the judges called it a birds eye. No being in this for very long when they refered to it as such I thought it was the correct term. The car that was being judged got dinged for it. Again, being new to this I am repeating what the people with way more experience then myself. I know you guys have tons of experience and based on this post I am ordering one as suggested above. If some of you have cars for so many years and they have "birds eyes or football marks" thats good enough for me. Thank you. Joe

Joe, I just wasn't sure if it was the same thing as what I call a football or if it was some other shape. Thanks for clarifying.
