1960 - Spring behind the window crank handle

I purchased the spring on the left several years ago and it does not make it difficult to install the window handle and insert the spring clip. I recently purchased another set of springs (lost the other small spring) and the large spring is so big and stiff that I can not get the window handle to stay on. I tried hitting it with a rubber mallet and the spring just pops it off.

Which spring, if either, is the correct shape/size spring for this application?

Did you install the little "U" shaped clip on the hand first? It should protrude into the slit on the handle, and then when you push it on, it should catch.

The spring on the left is the one that should be used.

Yes and the pressure from the spring popped the handle off. I am not 100% certain that I fully had the handle on and the spring clip seated, but I did not want to hit the handle any harder with a rubber mallet to seat it. With the smaller spring, a couple of hits from the rubber hammer and the handle was seated and the spring clip in place. I will probably cut part of the big spring off to reduce the tension. There will still be plenty of tension to keep the handle from rattling.

Thanks Edward, that is what I suspected. It is unfortunate that I lost the correct spring years ago and then received poor reproductions recently.

I may be alone but I have never had to use a hammer to intall the handles.

I actually installed the lock knob this morning by pushing the knob by hand from the side and it popped into place and the spring clip locked.

Joe,

I had not paid attention to this thread earlier. I got springs, probably a couple of years ago, which appear to be correct (picture attached). They came from Ecklers. Their website still shows them as part number 22534. Picture attached.

Now I have a question or two - how does all the stuff for the window cranks go together?

Does the large sponge rubber seal go against the window regulator assembly inside the door before the assembly mounts to the door, i.e. between the regulator and the door inner skin? Or, does the go on the regulator afte the regulator is mounted to the door inner skin, i.e. outside the door? If it goes inside to door skin then I've got to take mine back apart - bummer!!!!

For the spring as I posted a picture above, I assume the purpose of the spring is to keep the door panel tight against the plastic crank handle shim/washer and thus tight against the crank handle. If that is the case, the the spring would go with the smaller end of the cone against the door/regulator and the larger end against the door panel. Is that correct?

The AIM drawing is very confusing to me. I have attached a picture.

Can someone tell me if what I see is correct, i.e., the large rubber seal is inside the door inner skin, i.e. between the regulator and the skin?

I also have an arrow pointing to what looks like another plate/shim/washer at the end of the spring on the end of the spring next to the regulator, but if this is a part that gets installed, there is no part number for it. Is this something that is a separate part?

Last question - The AIM picture of the spring sure does not appear as conical shaped as the spring I posted above, or the one on the left in the original post. Is the AIM drawing just a poor representation?

That is the correct shape. I don't remember who, CC or Paragon, sent me a pair of mattress springs I think. I had a pair of the correct springs and one disappeared. I ended up using half of a spring out of one of my pop up sprinklers. The only part that can be seen is the small diameter at the outer end.

RE: door panel screws, the 1970 GM fastener book did not list the 2 door panel screws shown in the 1960 AIM.

Sorry I "over posted" on you. So you put the small end of the cone shaped springs against the crank handle? I was thinking that the larger end of the spring would go out to push outward on the inside of the door panel to keep it snug against the crank handle?

The large end of the springs I have are slightly larger than the hole in the door panel for the regulator shaft.

I have never studied the diagram in great detail, but I believe you are correct. The foam rubber seal went behind the inner door skin with the cup facing inside the door; covering the regulator. Your "What is this" item I believe is the outside diameter of the large hole that is called out and pointed to. The AIM picture does not show the actual shape of the spring.

I mounted the spring with the small end facing out because the small end of the spring is the same diameter as the small diameter bulged part on the plastic spacer. Someone else might need to confirm.

I don't think the large end of the spring will engage the plastic spacer if you install it large end out.

I was looking closely at the AIM picture I posted above. From that I thought the large end of the spring did not go against the plastic spacer but was meant to push out on the door panel to prevent any gap between the door panel, the spacer, and the handle.

I have been told by several people that the spring's purpose was to prevent the window roll up handle from rattling. When the handle is installed properly and the door panel is made properly, there is very little gap between it and the door panel.
