I have a lifter hanging up and I think I should replace all of them. It is a base 283/230. What are my options and where to buy

I would use the GM #5232720. A set of 16 of these is available under GM #12371044 and you should be able to buy this set for less than 100 bucks. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C1 Lifters
Bob,
Here is what I would do:
1. Remove the valve covers, pull the plugs and with a bump starter crank the engine to see the rockers move up and down and observe the oil system to the rockers. If there is oil pumping up the push rods to the rockers and all rockers move up and down at the same rate/height you likely have no cam lobe wear problem.
2. Then pull the intake and remove the cam lifters one at a time and look for concave/convex wear on the cam side of each lifter.
3. If you see any wear replace all the lifters.
4. I would order from com cams a complete set of hydrolics for the 283/300 hp engine.
Good luck.Dr. George

Re: C1 Lifters
Lifters are like ignition parts. They're all made by one or maybe two manufactures and sold under many brands including "GM", so NAPA or a local parts store would likely be cheaper than GM. Put the GM part number into the napaonline.com cross reference to get the Sealed Power number. Sealed Power is a Federal Mogul brand, and they are also likely the manufacturer.

Yes, there are only a small number of companies that actually manufacture valve lifters. In fact, that's how it's always been. Hylift-Johnson is one of those companies. Another was the AC Division of GM which manufactured the lifters for most GM applications as well as others. If I recall correctly, the AC lifter manufacturing plant was somewhere outside of Grand Rapids, MI. Of course, GM parts manufacturing operations were spun off to DELPHI, DELPHI went through a bankruptcy, and who knows what's become of the AC lifter manufacturing operations now. I believe that there was also at least one other major manufacturer of valve lifters but I don't recall who it is.
In any event, I consider and have always considered that the AC-manufactured valve lifters were the best of all those available. However, I do not know the source of the lifters now. If it's the same AC manufacturing source now under some other ownership, those are the lifters that I would still prefer. I can say this much: the lifters currently available from GM are the same part number as when they were manufactured by AC.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C1 Lifters
Bob,
When you say a lifter is hanging up what do you mean. I recall reading somewhere the retainer on a hydraulic lifter can be removed and the housing cleaned to remove and deposits etc. Maybe you should take a closer look before replacing them.- Top

Re: C1 Lifters
Bob,
Be careful with clicking noises as they could also be small exhaust leaks. If there is a loose rocker arm causing a lifter tick, I would try to adjust it first and pay attention to the rocker arm stud in the head as it could be working out slightly. There may not be anything wrong with the lifter.
It's a good size job to remove the intake manifold to replace lifters, how many miles on the motor..- Top

Re: C1 Lifters
You might try adding some Marvel Mystery Oil before you tear into the engine. My Mustang had sat for a while and had a stuck lifter. Added Mystery oil and it loosened up. Changed the oil and it has not given any problems in the past 10 years. It is worth a try, what have you got to lose?

MMO takes a while to work. You can't just pour it in and expect results in 200 miles.- Top
