    Spare or No Spare?

I just upgraded to Diamond Back radials from the original bias units. (HUGE difference, as you all have been saying!). I've been hauling around a spare since I got my '58. Now I'm thinking I don't need a spare, since I do only local cruising and these tires are so good. The weight savings might help my mpg a bit. Maybe.

What is your philosophy about spares? I'm willing to bet that few of you have ever needed one. Opinions?

    Thanks.

If you are never going to use the spare whether you have a flat or not, don't carry it around! Most C1 owners will never use the scissor jack (not the safest around) anyway. Gas mileage would be negligible.

Dave, I have not had to use a spare tire out on the road since I was 17 years old... a looong time ago. That being said, even as a card carrying AAA member, I am sure that as soon as I removed my spare a situation would arise in which I would give all I had for that spare! I would have to just haul it around. You probably couldn't measure the fuel savings. Chip.

As far as MPG goes, I always see the "Get rid of junk in your trunk" idea in those articles about improving gas mileage. That old bias spare that I have is heavy!

why would you want to have tires and jacks taking up space in the garage? why clutter up the garage when you have a proper place to keep these items!
