    NCRS Survivor Question

I have purchased a beautifully original 1970 L46 coupe in Laguna Grey. I have crawled over the entire car and it is completely original and properly date coded on every item that carries it. I thought about having it judged for survivor status but it has had one repaint and the carpet has been replaced (both in the 80's). Does this put me out of the running? I am afraid to clean up/dress up the engine bay if it can be judged. Any thoughts or advice would be more than welcome.

    Thanks in advance
    David

    David,
I think the "survivor" term is a Bloomington Gold award. Not sure of their criteria. The NCRS "Star" and NCRS "Bowtie" awards are for preservation excellence. The current Judging Reference Manual (8th edition) describes the awards in detail on page 45. You might want to order the JRM as it has several helpful suggestions on preparation. Read the manual BEFORE you start preparation efforts. Sounds like a great car!

The car is judged in four sections and must attain a specified percentage of originality to attain a star for that section: exterior and interior 85% each, mechanical and chassis 80% each. The repaint already rules out the exterior star. Interior might still attain 85%; it would be close. But you can always try for two or three stars. Take the car to a chapter meet and get expert opinions.

And as already been suggested, get the Judging Reference Manual. It details the entire Star/Bowtie process.

        David,
Survivor is a Bloomington Gold term; to earn it your vette must be 20 years old (yours is) and it must pass 3 out of 4 areas with 50 percent original; with total repaint you will lose one of the four; therefore, if all else is 50 percent original you can make it. Do not "clean up/dress up the engine" all original remember. BG happens once each year in June; it cost $450 to enter the vette. Good luck.

          Hi David,
Welcome! A new member AND first post!
It's sounds like you may have quite a nice 70.
If the mechanical and chassis areas of the car would do well in Bowtie judging there will still be a lot of interest in seeing your car.
Reba's advice is very good; take it to a Chapter Meet BEFORE you do anything. That way you'll have a better idea just what you have and how you might best proceed.
          Regards,
          Alan

I'm sure we'd enjoy seeing a couple of pictures of your new, old, car.

            Welcome David!

Congratulations on your purchase. Man, Laguna Grey C3's are at the top of my list for favorites! I don't think I can add any more to the good advice you've gotten already, other than to say make sure you study many, many other cars as you contemplate doing anything to your mostly original car. Guys like me with completely refreshed cars always run to cars like yours to see just how all the details were executed at the factory. After having mine for 7+ years, I still climb allover "benchmark" cars for improvements.

Like Alan says, let's see some pictures. Keep posting here.

Also, if you haven't gotten one already, get yourself a copy of the '70'72 NCRS Judging Guide. It's available on this site (on line store). It has a very detailed walk around of the entire car. You'll wear it out - I promise. There are tons of tips, tricks and even lessons to be learned here on the TDB. The wealth of knowledge though fellow members is staggering.

Another idea would be to bring the car to a regional meet and ask the team leader to have a quick look at it. They can give you an awful lot of info in a few minutes.

Thank you all for your input! I will get the judging guide ordered and will take some pictures for you all to see once I get back in town. This should be FUN!
