    64/65 blower cover carpet

I think we can all agree that the AIM's carpet section is a little cryptic. Like...combining LH & RH cut lines into a single view.

OK here's my question: the carpet piece on the blower cardboard panel --do the screws go through the carpet? Or is the cardboard screwed in place bare, and the carpet piece simply glued over it?

I see that the screws are the same as the kick panel, with cup washers, which might suggest they go through the carpet. But I see some assembly engineering logic in glueing the carpet down last, not to mention a cleaner look.

Hi Mike, I have the original kick panels and blower vent cover pieces in my 64 Coupe. All three are similar in construction, the carpet is glued to the cardboard then the grommets are pressed in and the back side flared to retain them. The screws go through the grommets into the body. The strange thing I discovered was that the kick panels and the blower cover carpet has a foam backing. The rest of the carpet for a 64 Coupe does not, and is glued to the formed underlayment.

Thanks Dan. Sounds like the original design was pretty robust with the eyelet reinforcements, and also using screws with cup washers.

On the foam, guess the designers wanted a "plusher" look? Maybe a NVH consideration? Very interesting (at least to some of us).

Mike, only the screw was used, no additional washers. The grommet was part of the kick panel and blower cover assemblies. The kick panel used two different screws for retention.

My 65 is exactly like Dan's except for the foam backed carpet.

            Thanks guys:

Certainly does make sense that the blower cover panel would be processed similarly to the kick panels (issued to line complete and ready to install).

Related question I've always wondered about: did JP Stevens supply the carpeting/cover panels as complete car kits, or as individual pieces that were stocked separately at the assembly plant?

The carpeting came from J.P. Stevens as individual pieces, not in car sets; all of it was installed on the Final Trim Line, after roll test, water test, and final paint repair. It was released as part-numbered "charts", where each individual piece had a "chart" part number, and that "chart" listed that piece with an individual part number for each color.

Thanks John! I've noted the AIM references to that chart, but didn't understand how it fit into the assembly process. Mike
