    '61 windshield washer system

When I push the windshield washer button, nothing happens. Wipers do not start, no fluid pumps. Anyone know how to determine why blades won't start when pushing button?

    Thanks,
    Bill

If it's like a '62 wiper system, and I fairly sure it is, pushing the button controls a vacuum valve that in turn causes the vacuum unit on the wiper motor that then engages the electrical switch turning on the wiper motor.

Not a great explanation but that's how it works. Might check vacuum at the interior control switch and on the actuating switch on the wiper motor.

Am sure there's a better explanation in the Corvette Servicing Guide.

The coordinator is the cylinder-shaped part that mounts on top of the wiper motor. The rubber diaphragm is most likely bad and will have to be rebuilt. Only one man does that, Tom Maxwell. You can test the coordinator by removing the vacuum hose from the back of the wiper switch and pulling a vacuum with you mouth or use a hand operated vacuum pump. If the coordinator is good, you will activate the wiper motor; if bad, coordinator will not function. There is also a quick test for the vacuum switch that is part of the wiper switch. Pull the vacuum hose off the back of the switch, install a short piece of vacuum hose, suck on the end of the hose with the button held and you should be able to draw air through the hose. Let go of the button and you should not be able to draw air through the hose.

This is the way the system works on my 1960.

Very, very helpful Joe. Thanks very much. I will try these procedures.
