    how many should there be that holds the latch? is it four or six?

      Repos have 4 spot welds.

      Originals have 6 spot welds.

            I thought there were 4 spot welds, one at each corner of the latch assembly where the latch attaches to the underside plate. The 2 nice depressions between the 2 welds on each side of the latch assembly are line up points to line up the latch assembly on the underside plate which has 2 holes drilled in it so the latch assembly is in position for the welding operation.                 this is what I found at Carlisle
                note the 6 spot welds


                this is on dads unrestored original paint 67.

                I do not know if it has been replaced or not.

                  Keith - I thing Dad's Gas Door is a replacement. I checked a known reproduction I have and it is embossed with 381440430181 (as best I can tell) by the hinge and it has no line up indentations for the latch, just the 4 welds. My original Gas Door has 38144041 30181-H embossed by the hinge and has the 2 line up indentations on the latch plus the 4 welds.
