    C1 rear axle fluid change

The owner's manuals for my '57 and '61 say to change the rear axle oil every 10,000 miles. Is it really necessary to change it that often?
Couldn't find anything about it in the archives.

That may have been good for the lubricants available at the time but even back then it wasn't necessary. Extreme circumstances would play a part in this like contaminants found during service checks. Using modern products like GM Multi-purpose Rear Axle Lube (good for posi and open differentials) you would probably never have to change it given the low miles most collector cars are driven. Just check it at your normal services for moisture from condensation (from prolonged setting) or metal particles ect. If it's clean don't worry about it.
