I'm doing a complete frame off restoration on my 57 vette. I have VIN E57S102202. I do not have any of the original driveline. I'm looking for detailed information on the correct transmission and rear differential including casting numbers. My plan is to install a 283 with dual 4 barrel carbs. I would also be interested in any parts that anyone has for sale that would matc my car.

Re: 1957 Driveline Components
your vin# appears to be too early for a 4-speed. if you are worried about correctness it would be a 3-speed or automatic. maincase casting number on 3-speed is 3855122. on the powerglide the converter housing will be 3719243 and rear housing 3708134.- Top

Re: 1957 Driveline Components
Hi John, Thank you for the information. From everything I had found so far, I thought that might be the case, but could not confirm it. I'm looking to return it to original, so I will be looking for a 3-speed transmission, belhousing and rear differential. if anyone has one for sale, please let me know.- Top

Re: 1957 Driveline Components
John, Do you have a judging manual? This $50 book is a wealth of knowledge. The Driveline free 50 word ad is the place to reach all the members if you are looking for parts. I hope to meet you someday.

Re: 1957 Driveline Components
Hi Scott,
thank you for the info! I got a copy of the manual. It is full of great information. I will try to get a listing in the driveline mag. I just got back from Carlisle. Planning to attend Bloomington again next year. Hoping to have my car done in time. Be on the look out for a Cascade Green 57 with an OH plate.- Top

Re: 1957 Driveline Components
John,
If you present the car at Bloomington in 2013 I will be judging your interior or engine. When I did my frame off I used Noland Adams C-1 book. I also purchased the AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual) a copy of the original assembly manual published by GM and sold thru the Driveline . If you are doing a 2X4 car the engine pad has to have an "EG" stamp for a 270 hp motor or an "EH" for a 245 hp motor.
I you use a powerglide trans the stamp will "FG". The 56-57 AIM will give you the info you need for all of the 3sp trans parts. It will also let you know the size and length of the drive shaft. The rear end would be a Posi unit 4.11 or 3.70 ratio if you have a 245hp or 270hp. ThePowerglide car would be 3.55 or 3.36, also a posi unit. The judging manual discusses the rear end. Best advise use the NCRS archives, it is filled with photos and a lot of knowledge.
Good luck and have fun.- Top
