    Pilkington Glass

Has anyone ever purchased a date coded windshield from Pilkington Glass? I'm considering a purchase of a 65 Coupe tinted windshield. They are close to me in Columbus, O. and their price is right.

    Regards,

I may be all wrong, but I recall reading that Pilkington Glass owns the LOF rights and makes most of the glass for the antique autos, at lease corvettes and the others date code and resell the glass.

The question would be how good is their date coding.

I have been told that NOS (can be date coded) LOF glass is still available. I would check that out.

The date coding is sand blasted on - not laminated between the layers of glass. A novelty but pretty much worthless for judging - IMO.

Interesting. So I see for example that Paragon sells a replacement windshield for my car for around $280 with no date code and another for $460-ish with a date code. These $460 date coded windshields won't pass NCRS judging? Definitely don't see the point in the extra $180 if that's the case.

I just got a new windshield in my 72 that is Pilkington brand... it is exact match to the old original that was from LOF. Looks great and easy install even with all the reveal molding to remove... just a thought... it's the perfect time to replace that old worn out weatherstripping!

            hope that helps,

It can't be an exact match if it has a different brand name on it.

                  Re: Pilkington Glass

ok i will be more clear on my previous statement: in general observation of the front windshield: the pilkington model number DW714 was spot on in comparison to the original LOF brand that was installed at the factory. The thickness of the glass and the coloration of the glass was exact when looking at the new and the original side by side. No, it does not have the original LOF markings nor the matching numbers of the original but for what I plan with my car, it is what I wanted.

Micheal Gill: along the lines of weatherstripping: to remove the windshield on a C3 the side a-pillar reeveal molding (2 pieces and 1 weatherstrip per side) along with the clip in top molding must be removed. The weatherstrip I am referring to is the front door weatherstrip and usually the old is brittle and gets torn when removing. I am not sure if it's even remotely the same on a C2 1965 model.

                      Re: Pilkington Glass

Libby Owens ford (LOF) was purchased by British company pilkington who has been recently purchased by NSG Nippon sheet glass a Japanese co. I believe mid year pilkington windshields are made in their Mexicali plant in Mexico and through pilkington classics will date code and logo it NHTSA says that the dot code must be on the windshield so you will see a dot code 177 along the edge....the original logo did not have dot code I think....the originals were not laminated, but we're sandblasted..so the repos are like original...the main difference is glass thickness and stretch of the shadeband...
