9 digits on the outside of the main case (example) 16Sxxxxxx for a 1966 Corvette.

There are NONE inside the transmission, but you should find it stamped on the vertical rib on the main case rearward of the side cover with the format 6SXXXXXX; see photo below of the VIN stamp on a '66 Muncie.
