    problem with '63 gas gauge, or sending unit?

    63' convertable gas gauge or sending unit problem?

    when the ignition key is off the gas gauge reads zero, as it should, but when the key is turned on it always reads about 5/8 full no matter how much gas is in the tank.

    Would this be a problem with the gauge, or could it be the sending unit?

    Thanks in advance for the advice/help.

    Colin, what Ive done in the past just to check the circut from sender to gage is take a common test light and the resistance across the filiment of the test lamp bulb will cause the fuel gage to be about a half a tank. You will have to unplug the sender wire and ground the test lamp and then just hold the test lamp on the wire and should see about 1/2 tank. Make sure the key is on. if all does as its suppose to, the sender is your problem.
