    1954 Fuel Pump/Fuel Strainer location Changes

    I had a question regarding the change in location of the fuel filter/strainer that was made between the 1953 /early 1954 which had the fuel bowl at up close to the carbs and the later 1954 being located at the fuel pump itself. I recall an article I read quite some time ago explaining the change but cannot seem to find it. Seems it had something to do with the fuel flow to the carbs but not sure.

    Was there a operational or performance advange to having the fuel strainer located at the fuel pump which I would assume was done for a reason?

      Nolands book said it was relocated near the pump to help with fuel pressure issues. My pump is putting out 7.5 psi and the carbs were flooding. I had to put a regulator just ahead of the carbs at 3.8 psi and they work with no dribble.

          Got it. Good advice Guy. So you mounted the regulator ahead of the carbs - is you fuel strainer at the pump or as I recall you had an early 54 which placed it up close to the carb?

          Getting very close to the first start up so I am sure I will have a "boatload" of questions in the next several weeks.

              shouldnt need a regulator.
              there is an issue with the fuel pump
              did you rebuild it?

                  My filter is at the pump. I had some folks in Texas rebuild the pump. I know I shouldnt have a regulator but it solved the problem, Its a Holly reg, I feel better knowing its not going to burn up on me. Is this just the chasis or is the body on it and wired? If its just a chasis, I rigged a starter switch with 10 gage wires, the ones at NAPA, the wires werent large enough and wouldnt engage the starter right. The larger wires solved the problem. I also hung some coffee cans with litter in them from the carbs to catch any gas that might come out. Frame paint doesnt like gas. I also
