1956 Radiator; 1956 spark plug wires

    1. Does anyone know where I can find a 56 radiator overflow tube clip which holds the tube in place to the side of the radiator support. It has a small flat punched clip on the back side which slides into a comparable slot in the support and is held in the slot by a punched dimple which clicks into the support slot. Has a curved clip to fit around and secure the tube in place. Spring steel. About 1-1/2 inches long and about 1/2 inch wide. 2. Does anyone know for sure whether the spark plug wires on a 56 2x4 engine were precut with the cylinder number embossed on them. My AIM illustration shows them, but no other reference or illustration shows them. Some vendors claim yes, some no. Also, orange plug covers or black? Thanks Reford

Reford,1956-57 JG says black wires with red 90* spark plug boots, distributor boots are straight black. No wire number reference is mentioned, but wires should be printed "RADIO T.V.R.S. GM" or "RADIO G.M. TVRS".

Reford, You could try Dewitts 517-548-0600. They do make the overflow tube. Mine was missing and I bought one from them. Luckily my clip was still attached to the radiator. But they might have the clips. Pete

I, too, bought the tube from DeWitt's, but they don't have the clips nor did they know of a source. Luckily, I had one on a spare radiator. Don't have any others. You'll need two total. Carlisle is coming up but chances of finding such a thing will depend upon your level of joy with pawing through the small parts bins of a thousand (?) vendors. You might try Mary Jo Roehner (might be there, wasn't last year), 858 / 451-1933, or Grossmueller's (always there) 908 /213-8832. Good luck.

Thanks to all of you for your input & help. FYI: My AIM illustration, page K154-155, Sec. 12-Sheet 10.00 is the only place I've found the reference to the numbers embossed on the individual wires with cylinder numbers, but it was revised in 57 but I can't tell what the revised portion was. I,too bought the overflow tube from Dewitts and found out they don't have them. I have one original, and had a friend with a tool & die business to try to duplicate the original, but he was unable to punch the slot to make the tab which holds it into the corresponding slot on the support, so I have one which will have to be soldered on. It's not spring steel, but looks like the original enough to possibly work. I thought about starting with a jack clip which Mary Jo has, in order to get the spring steel, but my friend didn't want to try to work with that. Thanks again for all your help. Reford

55-57 Passenger car uses the same clip. The one on my Corvette had a 1/8 hole drilled in it . That was the only differance. Maybe they had 2 suppliers.

Hard to believe the wires would be numbered as the printing was done on the cable as it was being made. Very difficult to change on the fly or devine how many foot long a section is for any given cylinder, especailly as the same base wire was being used on every GM car at the time...

Yes. Mine has the hole on the round shoulder of the clip. I'm going to try to find some old 55-57 passenger parts cars. Maybe one of them has a clip. Thanks. Reford

Just looked at my Noland Adams Restoration Guide & it has the same illustration as my AIM. Now I don't know which ones to buy. ????? Thanks Reford

Bryan, you didn't indicate what your radiator needs, but I had my early '57 radiator "restored" a few years ago by a shop here in the Atlanta area. My old core was beyond repair due to corrosion along the bottom header plate where it mounted the lower tank. They had a source for new cores which were almost identical to the originals, the only difference being one less row of vertical tubes. Overall width, thickness and height are the same, as is the fin configuration. Once completed you'd have to count the core tubes to know it wasn't original. They also restored my heater core with an identical replacement. I'd check around for a good radiator shop and ask them to find one of these current cores. I'm pretty sure they aren't NOS or something they had in the back of the shop for years, they had to order it from a current supplier. Or Dewitt's might be another source. Good luck.
