    5468309 BA Master Cylinder

My 69 L-68 with power brakes has a Master Cylinder casting 5468309 with a BA on the front tab.

In reading here I suspect the BA is incorrect for a 69 Corvette, some reading mentioned the BA type will cause a problem with the rear brakes.

Can someone clarify this as most things on my car are # / date correct and look quite original.

    Tks. Doug

The "BA"-coded master cylinder was originally used for 1969 Chevelles with disc brakes. However, I believe that a master cylinder using the "309" casting can be configured for 1968+ Corvette power brake applications. Is it possible that master cylinders with the "309" casting were originally used for 68+ Corvette with power brake applications? I think it is, although I would expect that a stamped code other than "BA" would have been used for such a master cylinder assembly.

You might check the forward brake line machined boss for a date code. It will be stamped in small font size.

O/k Joe, I find right in line with the master cap front snap ring, on the lower side of the master cyl., driver fender side, a stamped D3. For what it's worth the master cyl. cap is marked SAE J1703. My car was built Jan. 25, 1969.

      Thanks. Doug

I've never seen a "D3" date code, although I have seen that sort of CASTING MARK on these master cylinders (would represent Danville, IL foundry, pattern #3). The date code I referred to is on the flat machined boss into which the forward brake line fitting is tapped. It should be a 4 digit code stamped in 1/16" font size. It's not present on all master cylinders but those from 1969 usually have it.

Hi Joe. I'll have to look again, as I just did not find a stamped code, I'll take a closer look tonight.

          Tks. Doug
