question on installation of spare tire tub assembly for '63 convertable

just purchased the complete spare tire tub assembly for my '63 convertable. Installation appears to be somewhat staight-forward, but I would like to know if anyone might have suggested steps for installation. Also, if any installation pitfalls are known that would be appreciated.

    thanks, Colin 51038

Colin, its pretty straight foward there are (4) 5/16x1 bolts with washers upper tube plus the(2) 3/8x1 bolts hold the hanger in rear. the only cauition is the fiberglass is thin and can crack or break if mishandled. One other note is finding a correct diameter tire that fits in the tube. the repro tire that will barely fit is the BFG silvertown 760/15. If you put anything other in the tub get the outter diameter of the tire you wish to install. In the tire world today ever manufacter make a p20570r15 but no two tires are the same believe it or not.

Coupe or convertible installation is the same. What Ed has to offer is true, exercise caution when handling the tub (should it be an original) during installation.

..........and these tire manufacturers? Each one seems to have their own specification when developing a tire of any size. I added the longer front bolts which allowing my 205-75 to fit with relative ease.

Also, if your going to use radial tires in the tub, change the forward hanger bolts on the lid. I think Corvette America has the 10.5 inch bolts. They have no head-marks and are about $60.00. This will make closing the lid a whole lot easier. It will not close like an original bias ply tire but it will close without bending the lid.

When installing the aft bolt, ensure the bolt swinges side to side easily when you tighten the two attackment bolts. If it jams, remove and start over.
