    1968 correct color engine paint

    Greetings All;

Time to start painting engine parts and don't know the correct ncrs approved chevy orange paint. Looking at oreilly auto parts and they sell a couple different vht paints. Hope to buy spray can paint and not a pint can.
This is for the Small Block L-79, no paint on the oil dip stick, but paint the guide tube ? Also no paint on the metal vacuum tube for the distributor and the choke coil cover and linkage? Does any of the engine parts get overspray on them ?( carb , distributor, coil mounting brkt., fuel pump ? Oil fill tube gets orange paint with a chrome cap.
    Thanks in advance.

Do you have a copy of the TIM&JG 1968-69 Technical information Manual & Judging Guide)? It covers most/all you questions. If you don't have it check with the Cincinnati office. I am told (actually we all were in another thread) a new 1968-69 TIM&JG is due out shortly.

      Hi Jeff,
In addition to the TIM&JG, another source of information about 'orange engine parts' would be Section 6, 'Engine', in the AIM.
Since the engine was painted in the plant that assembled it, the parts added in St. Louis, (carburetor, starter, certain brackets, for example), and thus shown in the AIM, wouldn't have orange paint on them normally.
As always there are specific details for specific engines, but the AIM is a another place to start.
      Regards,
      Alan

Jeff, I Think some of the TDB members have expressed the Chevy orange from Quanta for being close to original. You maybe looking into the Archives for which parts were paint and want is not.As Terry says a new JG is due out soon.

          Hi Jeff,
I was thinking about your post again last night and remembered that while observing engine compartments being judged I hear the judge's comments about the AMOUNT of paint, (too much), on the engine more often than comments about it's exact COLOR.
So that too might be something you bear in mind while getting ready to paint.
          Regards,

            Jeff,
The advice Alan gave you is right on. The spray can orange are light on pigment and too heavy with carrier. I suggest to prime the engine first. That will allow you to get better coverage with less paint. The use of too much paint starts to fill in the cast texture of the cast iron and that is not what GM did back in the day. In this case less is better........

Thanks All for the feed back on this subject. Found some Chevy Orange Hi-Temp Rustoleum at Wal-Mart For $4 a can. Super coverage and dries to a satin finish, and not to Orange. I do think paints in the Late "60's " have more Red in them. Happy with this Cheap paint.

Re: 1968 correct color engine paint

Why not just buy the GM paint from the Delco parts department.
It is the same stuff they used 20 years ago. Why do I know this?? I have an old spray bomb can bought from GM 20 years ago. I am just restoring a 71 and my engine builder bought the recent orange engine paint from the GM dealer. I sprayed my old NOS Can # 992652 on an area of the newly painted engine and its the same stuff. I was surprised.
I don't have the part number of newest Engine paint can as threw it away.
But why not just spend a couple of bucks more and spray it right the first time. You may find the Hi Temp trustoleum tooo orange.

                Hope this helps.
                Grant

Not sure if this will help but here's a pic of my '72 LS-5. I painted it this past winter using VHT paint. It's probably a bit too heavy for judges but the color might be some help. Good luck!!

We also have dealers like that too. I've used(vht,dupli-color, krylon, tempo) to mention a few and they're all the same color just a different sheen. Chevy Orange is Chevy Orange, 90% of the judges can't see the difference. js

Most dealers have to order that paint. It has to go in with a oil & chemical order and there are minimum order requirements. If they are not making such an order at that time, or don't want to make that kind of order -- you get the results you got. I am not defending the dealer's actions; only explaining what might be behind it.
