    Tank Sheet professional paper conservator

    Hello,
Has anyone used a professional paper conservator service to clean a brown stained gas tank sheet?
Who did you use to perform this service?
Were you satified with the results?
What was the cost for the service?
    Thank you,

The brown spots on tank stickers is caused by several factors. The most common reason is from the chemicals used in the manufacturing of cheaper grade paper. Those chemicals are necessary to make the paper white, however over time they break down and cause those brown spots we see on most all the tank stickers.

Drew, this has come up before. If someone does'nt have a name for you, go to any used book store that has old books. They will know of someone who can help.

P.S You can also go to a local history museum.

Found a place in here in Chicago. To fully restore and conserve the "document" was close to $2000.

I have seen their place on a tour, very impressive.

            Hi Drew,

I can get you the contact information of the person I used last summer in Dallas. It cost $1500 and took over 4 months. Mine, from '75, was in bad shape and had several little pieces that had fallen off - which I had. She first set the ink to the paper, then removed all the dirt and pieced the thing back together. I had little brown spots all over mine, which turned out to be mold - common in old documents exposed to moisture. All of that was also removed. She also removed the rust colored adhesive on the back that affixed the sheet to the gas tank.

It will never look new, but mine is now readable and all in one piece. Now I have copies and it's stored in my safe deposit box.

I'll post the contact info tomorrow.

              Drew,
If you want someone in your area contact your local library or historical society and ask them for references. Chances are either group may have had paper conservation done and can share their experiences.

                Drew,

I used Lyzanne Gann at Blackthorne Assoc. in Dallas for my '75 tank sticker. 307.633.3522 fotocons@airpost.net

An example of their work on a stank sticker from the location here in Chicago I mentioned.

Amazing jobs shown in that link. But I wonder if in the future the modern cleaning/repairing materials could be detected and cause someone to doubt the authenticity of the documents? 'Cause, you know, we're all so trusting...

Great point! Its really a catch 22. Of course, watching Pawn Shop its all about the documentation and perhaps before and after photos with a letter of authenticity might be appropriate to convince a skeptic.

Wow, that was a good read. Really amazing. The cost seemed high to me initially but if you think about the hours that are probably involved it seems reasonable.

Great question about questioning the authenticity in the future though since they filled in holes and used colored pencil to blend it.

I would think that if you had before and after pics as well as the receipt for the restoration work there would not be an issue. I guess if the before was unreadable and the after showed an L88 there could still be some issues though!
