    Fuel Filter Attachment Nut '65

I am finishing up a refresh of my '65. The fuel filter holder is secured to the manifold by a nut on a intake manifold stud. My question is what color is the nut that is on that stud? Orange? Black?
Thanks for any direction on this question.

If the engine was 365 or 375 then the thin nut was zincad. I dont' know anything about the low HP car details.

The engine is a 327/300hp. Here is a photo in which you may can see the nut in question.IMG_4198.jpg

          Mike,

You need a hex nut that is about half as thick as a standard nut, called a check nut or jamb nut. As John mentioned, the finish is zincad (zinc or cad) and the color is silver. Under the nut should be a flat/plain washer.

            Michael,

The '65 JG calls for a star washer under the hex nut securing the fuel filter to the intake. Is this an error we should be aware of in the JG? I had purchased the fuel filter mounting hardware for my '65 from LIC and it did in fact include a star washer.

            Thanks,

            Dave Brown

              Dave,

I think this has been an error at several of the parts vendors for years. The washer is definitely a plain/flat washer. The part number from the assembly manual calls for it by part number (I don't remember the number) and the view and description in the parts book shows/describes it that way too.

There's another washer in the 63-65 AIM that was the same part number used on all 63-65 engines and that's the one securing the choke air intake pipe to an exhaust manifold stud. We know that washer was a flat/plain washer.
If someone happens to have an AIM handy, maybe they could look up the numbers to show that they were the same.

In the 64 AIM see Section L75 sheet 1.00 That calls for washer 120394 and nut 124829 as described by Michael. The 63 AIM has the stuff listed in Section L-75/L-76 sheet 3.00 where it calls out 120394 as a L- Washer ( it is possible that this misprint is where the notion of a star washer came from???)
If one looks up 120394 in Group 8.929 Flat Washers (Cadmium) it is listed as 13/32 x 13/16 x 5/64 (steel)

MIchael forgot to tell you that the washer in question is actually a thin SAE washer. Not a typical flat washer. My 63, the LWC has an original SAE flat washer on it. As Mike said it's the identical washer for the clean air tube. I don't know if the clean air tube washer is same finish as the filter stud washer???

Alan, Why don't you please write a nice article on this part for Vinnie. I always wanted to but didn't. You can do a better job than I can anyhow with all your research. Thanks, John

Here is a picture of the flat washer and thin nut in question on the exhaust manifold bolt. This is off a 1963 327/300hp engine.

Here's a link to a previous discussion on this topic that has a scan of the parts book showing the correct 120394 plain/flat washer.

The stud, washer and thin nut received from Long Isl Corvette does not include a star washer.

                          Mike,

Is the washer that is included a plain/flat washer?

Ok, you have it right. Sounds like Long Island Corvette has it corrected now.
